Title: Timber Stack Handling in CDK's
Post by: Grady on May 05, 2014, 07:23:25 PM
I am wondering if anybody is using a CDK (counter flow continuous Dry kiln) that is not forklift loaded/unloaded? We are looking at the possibility of converting 2 of our batch kilns into a CDK, but our system used Traversers and Kiln Trolleys to load the batch kiln one side and unload the other. this does not allow for forklifts to work in the same area and figuring out the logistics of a CDK with the equipment i have is proving problematic. If anybody out there is using this sort of equipment i would like very much to get in touch with you, or discuss it over this forum. Also are there any CDK's around the world that do not use a cart? ie use chains or rollers instead of the usual individual cart? Again any in site into these matters from my fellow timber driers would be appreciated.

Hi Grady,

Don't know anything about the size and nature of your drying operation....

I believe that batch kilns with proper control and drying management is far more superior by design, higher volume output, better exact control and with predictable outcome than CDK kilns. I think changing to CDK will reduce your output by at least 20-30%. If I were you, I'd rather pay a reputable drying expert to optimize the batch kilns and drying schedules, than to go the CDK route. Rather run "softer schedules" to improve quality and extend drying time. You can always crank it up again if you are drying too slow

....but, its your money, your choice.....
