Kiln Operator - Trainee

West Fraser operates several sawmills across the U.S. South and a Corporate office in Germantown, Tennessee. The business has approximately 2,400 employees and twenty-one plants.  West Fraser is a wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of West Fraser Timber Co. LTD., Canada.

Skills Required:
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good math skills including reading a tape measure
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attendance and safety record
  • Ability to work alone
  • Must have completed fork lift training and obtained drivers certification
  • Ability to learn basic computer related operating skills
  • Ability to perform the physical and safety requirements that make up the essential functions of this job.
  • Working in tight, close spaces, and hot areas for a short period of time
  • Climbing ladders and working in elevated areas
  • Must be a team player by: A) Participating in team meetings. Contributing by asking questions and listening to what is being said. B) Treating everyone with respect. C) Being constructive and tactful with all team members. D) Utilizing downtime or slow time to enhance the appearance of work area.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to consistently operate the kilns efficiently.
  • Maintain all kiln drying records.
  • Loads and unloads kilns in a timely manner.
  • Greases kiln motors and cars.
  • Checks fans for rotation.
  • Check kiln traps.
  • Must learn and demonstrates the ability to operate computer system at kilns.
  • Makes adjustments on drying schedules as needed.
  • Maintain acceptable moisture content according to SPIB.
  • Performs daily moisture checks and maintenance on the kilns.
  • Demonstrate ability to trouble shoot problems in the kiln area and communicate problems to maintenance daily   

Job Duties include but not limited to:
  • Perform all job assignments in an effective and timely manner with minimal supervision
  • Willing to work varied shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Operate job-specific equipment required by this job in an efficient and safe manner including cutting sticks using Hotec saw.
  • Repair kiln cars
  • Monitor drying process to obtain correct moisture content on lumber
  • Operate dry transfer car
  • Complete all check lists and mechanical repairs pertaining to this job
  • Complete all quality control and environmental requirements of this job function
  • Perform all ZES and confine space procedures
  • Perform the following key phases of Basic Care routes:
    Inspection of the equipment
    Servicing and minor adjustments to the equipment (when necessary)
    Cleaning of the equipment
    Documentation and reporting of results
