Wage: $60-$80k/year depending on experience
Education Required: College degree preferred but not required.
Years Experience Required:  The idea candidate must have a minimum of 3 years sawmill production finish end and shipping supervisor experience.

Description:
Manage the business and day to day operations of the sawmill  finish end and shipping areas while promoting safety, quality, productivity, recovery, employee development, manufacturing cost and value goals.  This will be a working supervisor position that will be on the floor throughout the day and involved with detailed improvement to all aspects.

Position Responsibilities:   
  • Lead the Sawmill finish end, lumber yard and shipping with a business mindset to continually improve safety, quality, production, lumber and grade recovery, and costs.
  • Responsible for green grading, sorters and sorter set up, dry and green stacker, tallies on green and dry along with ticket printing.
  • Fully in charge of all lumber graders for hardwood
  • Understand pine grading and have training process in place
  • All lumber inventories
  • Shipping of lumber
  • Stick lumber and dead pack lumber management on yard and warehouses / rotation of old lumber. Management of entire lumber yard, sheds and yard maintenance
  • Fully in charge of all drying all lumber and scheduling of kilns (will work with sales to schedule kiln) / responsible for weekend duties and scheduling of weekend duties.
  • Responsible for lift drivers and servicing schedule of all lift truck.
  • Improved plant packaging quality, efficiency and cleanliness.
  • Quality control of dry end lumber / Planner mill QC and efficiency
  • You are expected to lead with leadership and continuously strive to improve all areas of operations.
  • Take initiative to research and implement improved operational methods, including reducing target sizes.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for employees including employee training in safe equipment operation and motivate all employees to lead the sawmill to superior safety performance; inspect equipment to ensure safety devices are in place and in working order; lead safety behavior by example.
  • Constantly challenge us to find higher values in finished products and in other areas.
  • Team leader strong in encouragement and motivation; cooperate with other departments and department personnel.
  • Promote team communication and involvement within sawmill and between other departments.
  • Manage and direct flow of logs and lumber through the sawmill.
  • Track and publish critical performance indicators.
  • Fully accept responsibility for department.
  • Be a top level safety advocate and train employees and enforce proper use of implemented safety processes and procedures. This requires participation in safety reviews, training and audits.
  • Oversee all aspects of production and quality to ensure high levels of production while lowering costs and enhancing quality. This requires inspecting materials, products and equipment to detect defects, malfunctions and machine run ability.
  • Develop and manage various budgets (manufacturing costs, labor, production, etc.). Able to develop processes and procedures to manage these budgets and promote adherence of direct reports to these budgets.
  • Analyze work orders and production schedules to evaluate and project production outputs.
  • Collaborate with the Lumber Mill Manager, Supervisors and Wood Procurement to coordinate daily activities and determine production objectives to ensure optimal levels of quality production and timely delivery of products to customers.
  • Coordinate with supervisors to plan labor requirements for production schedules including overtime requirements to control and assure timely changes and efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure company assets and physical plant are secure and well maintained. Identify and recommend needed capital replacements as well as strategic capital. Working with engineers, vendors and other associated company personnel, ensure capital projects are completed safely, on time and within budget.
  • Perform root cause analysis to identify and eliminate bottlenecks and barriers to safety, quality, costs, productivity and attendance and achieve desired results through personal commitment, focus and compliance with plant and corporate best practices and policies.
  • Foster opportunities for learning and growth for all employees, ensure training procedures are up-to-date and documented and continue development for all supervisors and leads.

Position Requirements:
  • Proven success at prior sawmill finish end and shipping supervisory experience.
  • 3 years sawmill experience.
  • Experience with highly automated pine sawmill including optimizers.
  • Diverse background in the sawmill industry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Team oriented leader, engage others in decision making process.
  • Strong technical knowledge of sawmill technology, equipment and machinery.
  • Strong grading knowledge of both dimension, boards and industrial lumber products.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and encourage advancement in sound business decisions and in risk taking.
  • A business manager mindset, constantly challenging the status quo.
  • Knowledge, experience and skills associated with appropriate computer applications.
  • Ability to self-direct and prioritize workflow.
  • Ability to manage several assignments simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • High achiever who demands quality work, is efficient & constantly striving to improve processes & people.
  • High analytical ability
  • MS Office computer skills
  • NHLA / Pine grading is a plus
